June 19, 2008: Currently, GVAR transmits only factory-measured calibration coefficients for the Imager's visible channel, which quickly become out of date after launch. In the past few years, an adjustment factor for these coefficients has been provided by the STAR and used in many applications. We want to modify the SPS calibration database to include the adjustment factor, which will be updated monthly in collaboration with the STAR, and to modify the GVAR to include the adjustment factor in a location that is currently empty. Further details about the proposed change are provided in the “Visible_Calibration_Coeff_Update.pdf” White Paper which may be downloaded from the Downloads section of this page.

May 9, 2007: Added today is Section 3 (GVAR) of the next version of DRL 504-02, the GOES OGE Interface Specification Part 1, which will be published in the near future when all sections have been updated. This Section 3 is complete. It includes some format changes and corrections to the Section 3 found in DRL 504-02 Part 1, Revision 1, of October 2005, posted on this site. It reflects what is deemed to be the final version of GVAR Version 3 which supports GOES O and P.

June 18, 2007: Added GVAR changes required to support the Extended GOES High-Inclination (XGOHI) mission.

August 3, 2007: Added Section 4 (GIMTACS-OGE Interface) of the next version of DRL 504-02, the GOES OGE Interface Specification Part 1, which will be published in the near future when all sections have been updated. This Section 4 is complete. It includes some format changes and corrections to the Section 4 found in DRL 504-02 Part 1, Revision 1, of October 2005, posted on this site. It reflects what is deemed to be the final version of GIMTACS-OGE Interface which supports GOES N-P.

For MBCC implementation information please refer to the GOES Imager and Sounder Calibration web page.

September 20, 2007: Added GVAR for the XGOHI Missions Technical Note. NOAA is confirming that GOES-10 will no longer able to perform on-board image navigation by early October. NOAA is already seeing saturation on some of the image frames and in telemetry. The new ground-based image navigation system, XGOHI, is ready for long term testing and implementation. The University of Wisconsin has verified the XGOHI re-sampled data meets existing data quality and has compared the XGOHI re-sampled data with GOES-12 data. A draft presentation of the results of their study is at: ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/ABI/xgohi/XGOHI_summary_02Oct07_draft.ppt

On October 1 at 1343z, NOAA will command GOES-10 to stop on-board image navigation (e.g. switch to Imager IMC Off mode). Twenty four hours later on October 2 at 1343z, NOAA will turn on the XGOHI system to re-sample the images and provide ground image navigation on a fixed grid. The re-sampled GVAR data is almost the same as the traditional navigated GVAR data with on-board navigation on. However, if you need higher accuracy, there is additional information in the GVAR stream that will let you know if the re-sample system is on/off and show how to adjust your ingest systems to correct for timing. GVAR for the XGOHI Missions-Technical Note.doc is a white paper explaining the changes in the GVAR system. This document will also be posted on our GOES-10 web site.

In the near future, NOAA will provide a document describing the method used to re-sample the data.

If you have any problems after we have turned the re-sampling system, please notify NOAA through the OPS Committee email group: OPS_Committee_GOES_10@noaa.gov
