Ground Systems
Vanessa.L.Griffin
is the Chief of the Ground Systems Division (GSD). She can be reached
at 301-817-4590. GSD provides technical and engineering consultation
for satellite ground systems.
Major Activities:
- Serve as resident source of expertise in satellite ground systems
design with emphasis in telemetry and command, instrument data processing,
image display and analysis, product generation, data archiving, communications,
and associated ground equipment, infrastructure and facilities.
- Plan ground system activities leading to new satellite systems, including
the introduction of significant new services and products.
- Evaluate new technologies for satisfying current and future ground
systems requirements.
- Lead ground systems development efforts including specifying, procuring,
installing, and testing NESDIS hardware and software systems resulting
from requirements generated during system planning activities.
- Work directly with OSDPD, OSO, SAO, NASA and other agencies to ensure
compatibility of future satellites with existing and future ground
systems.
- Support the Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution,
the Office of Satellite Operations and the Office of Research and
Applications by providing new ground hardware and software, as well
as significant modifications or system enhancements to existing systems
and facilities.
Current and Near Future Activities:
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S.
General Services Administration (GSA) today broke ground on the site of a
new $61 million Satellite
Operations Center in Suitland, Md. The new building,
which is expected to open in 2005, will house current and future environmental
satellite operations of national and global significance.
- The Facilities Master Plan Executive Summaries (FMPES) linked below
incorporate National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA)and
National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service
(NESDIS) mission requirements and strategic vision. The FMPES' provide a
synopsis of the factors affecting infrastructure development of the Fairbanks
and Wallops Command and Data Acquisition Stations, an assessment of existing
buildings and their utilization, and a framework for future development in
support of mission requirements. The FMPES contains essential text, and
materials to give the reader a firm understanding of the character and
structure of the Fairbanks and Wallops Command and Data Acquisition Stations,
the surrounding operating environment and the steps planned to implement a
cohesive capital investment program and revitalization of the two NOAA/NESDIS
operating stations.
