Plans For 2002 Public Meetings

Severe Weather
Transportation: Aviation, Shipping, Trucking Utilities: Mining, AC Weather: Lighting, Hurricanes, Floods

Last year NESDIS conducted studies to better identify users needs and benefits that would be accomplished with improved capabilities of the GOES sensors. In support of this study, public meetings were held with constituents at NOAA Offices in Silver Spring to identify areas of improvement that would be of great benefit to our users in the accomplishment of their missions or delivery of their services. We need to completely understand your needs to best service you, our customers. The benefits from improved data and products will not only be critical to the economic well being of our users but will further national interests such as homeland security and national well being. It is critical to the forward movement of our program to continue this dialogue with our constituents and solicit your support in the continuing budget process and defense. Thus NESDIS is planning to continue this dialogue through a series of planned public meetings in the Spring of 2002. We wish to continue to ask our constituents to step up and tell us how improvements in temporal and spatial resolution of our data and the accuracy and precision of our products will impact your daily operations. Some of the issues we would like to address are:

Operations and decisions that are dependent on GOES products.
GOES unique products or data that are significantly useful to you.
Utilization of these products and/or data.
Impact of these weather and environmental products and data on specific
   operations and decisions.
Assessment of need for new and/or improved data and products.
Delineation of types of new and/or improved products that would be valuable
(e.g., reduce temperature error for three-hour temperature forecast).
Application of new and/or improved products to decision-making/operations.
Assessment of operational and economic value of new and/or improved
   GOES data and products.
