GOES 12 Status
  • The GOES-M Satellite was successfully launched at 3:23 a.m. on July 23. Launch vehicle performance was nominal. Solar Array Phase-1 deployment was completed successfully resulting in a power positive state for the spacecraft.
  • GOES-M is different from GOES I, J, K, L
    • First Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI) – Built by MSFC
    • 6.7 micron water vapor channel (used for upper level winds) resolution improves from 8 km to 4 km
    • 13.3 micron replaces 12.0 micron channel - accuracy of steering level wind height (~500 mb) improves
    • Working with NWS for AWIPS readiness
  • Final hand-over to NOAA in Storage Mode - December 21, 2002
  • Taken out of Storage - January 24, 2003
  • Operational (Replaced GOES-8) - April 3, 2003
