GOES 12 Status

The GOES-M Satellite was successfully launched at 3:23 a.m. on July 23.
Launch vehicle performance was nominal. Solar Array Phase-1 deployment
was completed successfully resulting in a power positive state for the
spacecraft.
- GOES-M is different from GOES I, J, K, L
- First Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI) – Built by MSFC
- 6.7 micron water vapor channel
(used for upper level winds) resolution improves from 8 km to 4 km
- 13.3 micron replaces 12.0 micron
channel - accuracy of steering level wind height (~500 mb) improves
- Working with NWS for AWIPS readiness
- Final hand-over to
NOAA in Storage Mode - December 21, 2002
- Taken out of Storage - January 24, 2003
- Operational (Replaced GOES-8) - April 3, 2003
